I looked it up, and Elvish isn’t a romance language. Which makes sense, considering the way Rhys reprimands me in his mother tongue is not even remotely romantic.

“How many times must we review this?” he asks, sounding as frustrated as I feel.

“At this point, can’t we just move on? Or admit that you’re not a very good teacher?” I suggest, which unsurprisingly grates on his nerves even more. I can’t help myself. When I’m with Rhys, I naturally revert to Mar.

“I might not be the best teacher,” he admits, “but you are an atrocious student.”

“At least I’m not abysmal.”

“You just proved my point.”

“It’s too early to learn, let alone speak a foreign language,” I say, pointing to the starfish-shaped clock on the wall. We’re in Allegra’s living room as she sleeps upstairs, the lucky duck. To be fair, she hasn’t been feeling well since the pool incident. She hasn’t been attending combat class either, but I don’t blame her after what happened. “It’s a weekend, too.”

“I am speaking a foreign language. And it is 9:21 AM; this is not early.”

“It’s the weekend,” I repeat. “The weekend, may I remind you, after a shitty week. I’ve been attacked, questioned, shoved in a pool, and now I’m on the security office’s watch list based on a false accusation by a roommate with a grudge against me.”

Not that the security office has called me back since yesterday. I haven’t seen Natalie either, though maybe that’s a good thing. She’s recovering in a hospital on the mainland. I’d love to question her, or at least figure out why she’s accusing me of stabbing her. Aside from finding my fingerprints on the knife, did the culprit say something to her? Was there any other indication that made her believe I was the one who attacked her?

“Do you understand their suspicions?” Rhys asks.

I shake my head. “Not in the least. In their eyes, I’m human—how could I compete with a shadowborn?”

“Perhaps that is why they are scared, and they lash out. They fear you are more powerful than humans are made to be. You must remember, most of these students live in communities where humans are rare,” Rhys explains, leaning back in his chair. “They fear the unknown.”

“That’s so cliché.”

“You should tell them so.”

“I don’t appreciate the sarcasm. Nor the fact that you don’t change your tone of voice when being sarcastic.”

“English is my second language,” he says, but he knows very well what he’s doing. “I thought you would be someone who appreciates sarcasm, given you seem to be so well-versed in it.”

“Me, sarcastic? Never,” I joke. “How do you relay sarcasm in Elvish? Now that’s a lesson I want to learn.”

“Ah, but it is not one I am willing to teach. I fear you will use what you learn for nefarious purposes and end up getting yourself killed.” He’s not smiling, but there’s something in his eyes that tells me he wants to. Or maybe I’m reading way too into it, again. “Enough of this side-tracking.
